The Mansfield District Finals saw two SBC champions of their respective division, square off Saturday afternoon and it was the Truckers of Norwalk who topped the Sailors 46-39.
The Truckers would open up the scoring from the opening tip, but it was threes by Jonah Pfeil, Seth Hurd, and Reese Miller on their next four made shots that gave the Sailors an early 11-6 lead. The Sailors would then go scoreless down the stretch, but would still lead 11-9 after one.
Mason Montgomery would score early for the Sailors, but the Sailors would go cold the remainder of the quarter. The Truckers would capitalize on the cold streak by the Sailors scoring 7 straight, until Hurd knocked down a free throw to make the score 16-14. That would ultimately be the half time score as the Sailors trailed by just two.
The Truckers would score the first two baskets of the second half to give themselves a 6 point lead early, but the Sailors would bounce right back and cut the Trucker lead back to 2. The Truckers would then begin a 7-0 run to give them a 9 point 27-18 lead. The Sailors would get as close as 7 points to the Truckers, but a last second Trucker shot pushed their lead back to 9 and the Sailors were down 33-24 at the end of three.
The Truckers would try to slow things up even more in the early stages of the fourth and created a their biggest lead of the game at 11 points. It would be a Montgomery three that would jumpstart the Sailors offense, and they would cut the Truckers lead to 7. The Sailors would then cut the Truckers lead to 5 following a Luke Pena layup and it was 35-30 midway through the fourth. The Truckers would then push their lead back to 7, but back to back Sailors baskets would trim that lead down to 3. Following a pair of Trucker free throws, Sterling Benko would connect on a huge three to once again trim the deficit to three, at 42-39. The Sailors could not capitalize on the momentum, and the Truckers would knock down 4 free throws, and score the 46-39 victory.
Seth Hurd paced the Sailors with a team high 8 points. Mason Montgomery finished the contest with 7 points and a game high 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Jonah Pfeil and Reese Miller each added 7 points and 3 rebounds. Pfeil also dished out 3 assists. Luke Pena added 5, Sterling Benko finished with 3 and Zach Kovach had 2.
The Sailors end their season with a 19-6 record. As for the seniors they will finish their career being apart of 70 program wins, including a perfect freshmen season.
