The Sailor’s boys varsity basketball gave it all they had in the championship game of the Vermilion Athletic Booster Club Tournament but Spire Academy had too much fire power as they topped the Sailors 102-75.
Spire came out shooting hot and that continued on for most of the game but they only led by 11 after the first quarter of play. The Sailors fought back hard in the second quarter and outscored Spire 25-22 and cut the lead to 8 after a last second Zach Kovach put back off a free throw miss.
The Sailors hung tight early in the third quarter of play but Spire Academy slowly began to pull away in the second half outscoring the Sailors by 19.
Mason Montgomery matched his total from last night pouring in 31 points for the Sailors, while earning All-Tournament team. Jonah Pfeil who also was named to the All-Tournament team added 14 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Reese Miller who defended LaMelo Ball throughout the contest added 10 while pulling down 5 boards and also had 6 assists. Seth Hurd had 8 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
The Sailors will be back in action next Friday as they travel to Port Clinton to take on the Redskins in their first SBC game of the year.
