The Vermilion Sailors stayed in it until the end, but Columbian pulled away late in a 9-7 victory on Wednesday. Columbian was down 7-6 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Haileigh Kutscher doubled on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs.
Vermilion Sailors Varsity collected 12 hits and Columbian had 13 in the high-scoring affair.
The Sailors opened up scoring in the first inning. Vermilion scored one run when Jayden Peak singled.
Morgan Potts toed the rubber for Vermilion. The righty allowed nine hits and seven runs over five and a third innings, striking out two. Danielle McGlothlin threw two-thirds of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
The Sailors launched one home run on the day. Peak had a dinger in the fifth inning.
Grace Payne, Jenna Peters, and Peak each collected multiple hits for Vermilion. Payne led Vermilion Sailors with three hits in four at bats. Next up the Sailors take on the Clyde Fliers in an SBC matchup at home on Friday.
