The Sailor boys varsity basketball team took to the road Saturday afternoon to take on the Edison Chargers in SBC cross-over action. Despite a rough start the Sailors used a strong effort to close out the Chargers 71-49.
In a game that shaw a combined 58 free throws attempted, the Chargers got off to a hot start as they controlled the opening 8 minutes of action. Growing their lead as many 8 midway through the opening quarter. The Sailors trailed 19-12 after one.
It was not until the midway point of the second quarter where the Sailors took control of the lead. Trailing 26-23 the Sailors knocked down a three ball to tie things up, which jumped started their 10-1 run, which was capped by a Matt Saegert buzzer beater to close out the first half. The Sailors led 33-27 at the break.
The Sailors were firing on all cylinders coming out of the break. Using a 8-0 run to expand their lead to 15. The Sailors kept things rolling in the fourth growing their lead to 20, getting over their first quarter woes to knock off the Chargers 71-49.
Ben Rini led the Sailors with a team high 14 points and 9 rebounds. Donevan Lewis netted 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Saegert stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Zach Jones hit three from downtown to finish with 9 points. Gus Matheson chipped in 7 points. Cole Groene connects on two three’s for 6 points. Jack Wells added 5 points. Andrew Hendershot chipped in 4 points, and Justin Wagner rounded out the scoring with 2 points.
With the win the Sailors improve to 5-4 on the season and return to action Tuesday night to take on the Sandusky Blue Streaks at home in conference action.
