The Sailors boys varsity basketball team needed some bonus ball Wednesday night to knock off Sandusky Perkins 56-53 on Senior Night.
From the opening tip it was a sign we were going to be in for a good basketball game and that is exactly what we got. Neither team would be able to grow a lead early, as both the Sailors and Pirates exchanged the lead 4 times and were tied on 4 separate occasions. We were all tied up at 14 apiece after one. It wouldn’t be until midway through the second quarter when the Sailors were able to grow a 7 point lead. However, that lead was short lived as the Pirates would be able to pull back within 3. The Sailors managed to hang on to their small lead and led 28-23 at the break.
The Sailors used that momentum to finally build a double digit lead in the third. The Sailors would use a 13-3 run to grow their lead to 41-28, the largest anyone would have in the game, midway through the third. It would be the Pirates would use a 12-0 run through the remainder of the third and into the fourth to find themselves down one.
It wouldn’t be until two minutes in to the fourth when the Sailors finally got on the board. They still would hold a 43-40 edge on the Pirates. The Pirates were finally able to tie things up at 44 apiece and ultimately take a 46-44 lead with under two minutes to go. The Sailors were able to tie things up at 46 off an offensive rebound and put back. The Pirates would hold for the last shot and came up empty sending it to overtime.
The Sailors would never trail once overtime hit, but the Pirates wouldn’t go away quietly. The Sailors would lead by four twice, but the Pirates cut the lead back to one on an old fashioned three point play. The Sailors lead 54-53 before knocking down a pair a free throws to lead 56-53. The Pirates last second three fell short and the Sailors held on to notch their second win of the season.
Zach Kovach paced the Sailors with 20 points and 8 rebounds in his last home game as a Sailor. Ethan Young came off the bench and knocked down three triples en route to 10 points. Jack Wells and Matt Saegert each chipped in 6, as Wells dished out 5 assists, and Saegert grabbed 5 rebounds. Ben Rini added 5. Donnie Lewis finished with 4. Chad Rich in his final home game for the Sailors knocked in a three. Justin Wagner rounded out the scoring for the Sailors with 2.
With the win the Sailors improve to 2-19 on the year and finished SBC Lake Division play 2-10. Their regular season finale is next Tuesday when they hit the road to take on Clearview.
