The boys varsity basketball team clinched at least a share of their third consecutive SBC Bay Division crown, as they topped Margaretta 62-51.
The Sailors left their shooting woes from Friday night in the rear view mirror as they got off to hot start against the Polar Bears. The Sailors jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but the Polar Bears clawed right back into the game as they would respond to each Sailor run. The Polar Bears found themselves down one before the Sailors connected on a triple to push their lead back to 4, 18-14. The Polar Bears would cut the lead to two before the Sailors knocked down a shot of their own and led 20-16 at the end of one.
After exchanging baskets early in the second quarter, it looked like the Sailors found the upper hand after they led 23-20, and with blink of eye they led the Polar Bears 35-22. The Polar Bears just would not go away, as they responded with their own 10-0 run, including a long three at the buzzer to pull with into 3 on the Sailors. The Sailors led at the break 35-32.
The Polar Bears came out with all the momentum in the second half, despite the Sailors knocking down shots early in the third. The Polar Bears outscored the Sailors 8-4 in an early stretch to gain their first lead of the night at 40-39. From there it was all Sailors for the remainder of the quarter. The Sailors would respond with a 10-0 run to lead 49-40, and would find themselves up 10, 52-42, heading into the fourth.
However, the Polar Bears were not going down without a fight. They stormed right back in the contest when they opened up the fourth on a 7-0 run to cut the Sailors lead to 3. The Sailors would respond a 6-0 run of their own to lead 58-49 late in the fourth, and ultimately outscored the Polars Bears 10-2 down the stretch in the fourth to clinch at least a share of the SBC title with the 62-51 victory.
Mason Montgomery finished the night with a game high 21 points, including 5 triples, and fell one rebound shy of a double-double, pulling down a game high 9 rebounds. Jonah Pfeil knocked down 4 triples en route to 18 points, while dishing out a game high 6 assists, and grabbed 5 boards. Luke Pena finished the night with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Reese Miller added 4 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Davis McDaniel knocked down a three, and Zach Kovach and Sterling Benko each had 2.
With the victory the Sailors improve to 17-3 on the year and 10-1 in the SBC. They can guarantee themselves an outright SBC championship with a road victory over SBC rival next Friday when they travel to Huron.
