The Sailors suffered from a cold shooting night, as they suffered their first SBC loss on the year, fallings to the visiting Willard Crimson Flashes 54-48.
Willard open up the scoring with a quick layup and the Sailors would only tie the game up at 7 apiece, and Willard would take the lead once again and never surrender the lead to the Sailors. However, the Sailors were never out of contention. Once the game was knotted up at 7 apiece, Willard would score 6 straight to open up a 13-7 lead over the Sailors. The Sailors would hold Willard scoreless down the stretch and score 5 straight to pull within 1 heading into the second quarter of action.
Willard would respond offensively, as they opened up the second quarter of play on an 8-2 run and they lead the Sailors 21-14. The closest the Sailors could get in the second quarter was 6 points, as Willard kept their offense rolling throughout the remainder of the first have. The Sailors would find themselves down 29-23 at the break.
The Sailors would find the edge defensively, as they held Willard to their lowest scoring quarter of the game at 7 points. The Sailors would open up the scoring in the third with a three and pull themselves within three. The Sailors would cut Willard’s lead to two, following a made free throw, but Willard would answer with a three of their own to push their lead back to 5. The Sailors buried two triples down the stretch of the third quarter, but still found themselves down 36-33, heading into the fourth.
Willard would come out strong in the fourth and push their lead to as many as 7, but the Sailors would not go away quietly. The Sailors would cut Willard’s lead to 48-46 with under two and half to play in the game. After two made free throws by Willard, the Sailors would answer on the offensive end, and they still trailed by 2 with under a minute to play. Willard would knock down a fair of free throws, and cap it off with a steal and layup to seal the 54-48 road victory over the Sailors.
Reese Miller paced the Sailors with a game high 18 points, whiling connecting on three triples. Mason Montgomery finished with 9 points, finished tied for a team high 8 rebounds. Jonah Pfeil and Sterling Benko each finished with 6. Pfeil dished out a game high 4 assists. Zach Kovach chipped in 4, and finished the night with 8 rebounds. Luke Pena finished with 3 points, and Seth Hurd added 2.
Following the loss the Sailors fall to 16-3 on the year and 9-1 in the SBC, still one game ahead of Willard. The Sailors look to clinch at least a share of the SBC Bay division, when they return to action tomorrow night when they travel to Margaretta High School to take on the Polar Bears.
