It was a tale of two halves the for the Sailors as they fell to Oberlin 51-36 in the consolation game of the Vermilion Athletic Booster Club Tip-Off Classic.
The Sailors would lead for the majority of first quarter of action but the Sailors could only grow a modest 4 point lead. Oberlin would take a 1 point lead midway through the first 8-7, but Sailors would outscore them 5-2 down the stretch to take a 13-10 lead after one.
The Sailors remained scrappy in the second quarter, but Oberlin would fight right back leading by as many as 6. The Sailors would find a spark offensivly late and take a one point 23-22 lead into the half following a Jack Wells three.
The second half was a different ball game for Oberlin as they controlled the third quarter, holding the Sailors to 4 points, and pushed their lead to 10 closing out a 7-0 run to end the quarter. The 7-0 run would push to an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter, and they led the Sailors by 14. The Sailors could only cut the lead to 12 before the Phoenix led by as many as 16 points before closing out on their 51-36 victory.
Zach Kovach finished the game with a team high 12 points, and pulled down a game high 15 (10 offensive) rebounds, notching the double-double. Ben Rini grabbed 12 rebounds to go with 4 points. Hunter Etienne added 5 points, while Donnie Lewis and Chad Rich also had 4 points. Wells connected one three ball to finish with 3 points. Zach Jones and Gus Matheson rounded out the Sailor scoring with 2 apiece.
Following the loss the Sailors (0-2) will open up Lake Division action next Friday at home when they take on the Blue Streaks of Sandusky.
