The Sailors opened their season in the Vermilion Athletic Booster Club Tip-Off Classic Wednesday night against the Huron Tigers, and fell to the Tigers 63-47.
The Tigers got off to a hot start as they opened up the contest on a 7-0 run, forcing the Sailors to call a timeout. The Sailors finally got on the board after a Zach Jones basket, but it was all Huron in the first quarter and they led by 10 after one.
The Sailors fought back in the second quarter after Huron opened up the scoring, but Chad Rich sparked the Sailors with a three. The Sailors used the spark to cut the Tigers led to three midway through the quarter, but the Tigers pulled away late to lead 35-24 at the break.
The Sailors struggled coming out of the break, and the Tigers took full advantage of it. After exchanging baskets early, the Tigers went on a 12-0 run and took control of the game. The Sailors finally got the offense moving in the fourth, but it was too late, and they fell to the Tigers 63-47.
Zach Jones finished tied for a game high 18 points for the Sailors. Zach Kovach finished the night with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Ben Rini added 8 points, and tied for a game high 7 rebounds. Jack Wells chipped in 2 points, and dished out a game high 6 assists. Chad Rich added 4, Hunter Etienne and Gus Matheson rounded out the scoring with 1 apiece.
The Sailors will play in the consolation game of the Vermilion Athletic Booster Club Tip-Off Classic Friday against Oberlin, who fell to Bay in game one. The game will tipoff at approximately 6 pm.
