The boys varsity basketball team took to the road Thursday night against rival Firelands and the Falcons grabbed the Stillman Cup with a 63-61 victory in overtime.
The Falcons jumped out to an early 11-0 lead but the Sailors were able to rally in the later stages of the first quarter. The Sailors really found their stride in the second as they slowly began to chip away at the Falcons lead. The Sailors finally grabbed the lead from the Falcons with under a minute to go in the half to take a 27-26 lead at the break.
The Sailors were firing on all cylinders coming out of the break. After hanging on to a one point lead the Sailors used a 13-3 run over the middle stages of the third to grow their lead to double digits. However, Firelands rallied back and only trailed the Sailors 47-41 heading into the fourth.
The Sailors held onto their lead through the majority of the fourth quarter. Firelands ultimately tied the game up at at 57 before taking a 59-57 lead late. The Sailors were able to tie it up at 59 all to force overtime. The Sailors scored the open basket in overtime but the Falcons scored the next six to grab the 65-61 victory.
Matt Saegert led all scorers with 25 points . Jack Wells netted 12 points and dished out a game high 7 assists. Ethan Young added 9 points all coming from three and added 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Ben Rini chipped in 7 points and 4 rebounds. Justin Wagner added 4. While Gus Matheson and Donevan Lewis rounded out the scoring with 2 apiece.
The Sailors fall to 6-12 on the year. They are currently scheduled to return to action tomorrow to take on Brookside in non-conference action.
