The Vermilion varsity basketball team held a Bay Rockets basketball team fresh off a 105 point outing to 46 points, in their 62-46 victory in non-conference play.
The Rockets got off to a hot start, as they exchanged three point buckets early in the contest with the Sailors, to give them a 18-16 lead after one. The Sailors then stepped it up defensively holding the Rockets to 12 points over the next two quarters of play and had a 5 points lead at the half. The Sailors offense kept the tempo up with 18 points in the third expanding their lead to 18 heading into the fourth. The Rockets got some momentum going in the fourth but it wasn’t enough as the Sailors held on to defeat the Rockets by 16 points.
Mason Montgomery paved the way for the Sailors with 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting, while grabbing a game high 8 boards and 5 assists. Joby Pfeil finished the night with 22 points on 8 of 13 shooting with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Reese Miller had 15 on 5 of 6 shooting, 4 of 5 coming from three point territory. Miller also grabbed 7 boards. Luke Pena finished out the scoring for the Sailors with 2 points.
The win pushed the Sailors record to 15-3 on the year with a non-conference matchup against the Clearview Clippers on Tuesday night in Lorain.
