Alex Hershberger finished 2nd in the Boys Varsity race with his highest finish of his career.

VERMILION – The Vermilion Cross Country hosted the Obenour XC Invitational on Saturday, October 3rd on the Sailors athletic campus. 16 teams participated in any of eight (8) High School races or eight (8) Middle School races throughout the day featuring 650 athletes.

The host Sailors competed in session one of the day, which started at 8:00am competing against seven other programs. The Boys Varsity team set the tone with the first race of the day with a 3rd place finish. The Sailors had seven (7) season bests, five of which were career bests. including two Top-10 finishes from Alex Hershberger (2nd/17:43), and Jayden Bearden (10th/18:44), both the highest individual finishes from their careers. Five other Sailors turned in career best performances including Jacob Webb (11th/18:51), Aiden Miller (17th/19:11), Jack Wells (35th/21:39), and Dylan Cote (37th/21:50).

Allison Leopold set a new season best with a individual runner-up finish.

The Sailors High School team competed in the Junior Varsity races for the boys and girls fields later in the morning with additional impressive performances including all five Lady Sailors on the line turning in season bests times including an individual runner-up finish from Allison Leopold with a time of 23:39, only her second time breaking the 24:00 mark in her career. Other season best performances came from Grace Morris (25:55), Alex Tremble (27:23), Danielle McGlothlin (28:18), and Riley Rhodes (31:57).

“I am really proud of our efforts this weekend on our home course” Coach Ryan Ladd said. “Our team competed today, it’s something we have strived to work on in our program and get better and better at each week and today showed that we had the right mindset and our work over the past two weeks have prepared us to run our best in October”

North Ridgeville won the Boys Varsity and Girls Varsity Session 1 team titles.
The North Ridgeville boys scored an impressive 36 points behind four top-6 finishes including the only individual to cross before Hershberger when Alex Serena crossed with a winning time of 17:38.  The Lady Rangers followed suit with five top-10 finishers including the top freshman place of the day with Madelyn Palclic’s third place finish (20:53).

Following the completion of Session 1, eight more programs stepped on campus for round two of the Obenour XC Invitational, which proved to be a highly competitive meet. Bay, ranked 4th in the Division II State coaches poll won the Boys Varsity race, while their unranked girls program matched that performance by knocking off Olmstead Falls, who is led by returning All-Ohio runner and two-time Obenour XC Champion Katie Clute after her individual winning time of 18:18.

“Saturday was a great day to be a Sailor. We are so fortunate to have such a impressive athletic complex to showcase during the Obenour and I know our program does a wonderful job of providing a great experience for our visiting athletes, coaches, and spectators” Coach Ladd said. “We saw some great performances not only from our own program however by some of the best runners in the State, but i think they will always remember our meet due to the energy, organization, and welcoming enviornement we provide at Vermilion”.

The Sailors have a bye week this weekend and will next compete at the Sandusky Bay Conference XC Championships at Tiffin Hedges-Boyer Park on Saturday, October 17th.
