VERMILION- The Vermilion Sailors cross country program hosted the Inaugural Lake Erie Cross Country Challenge Saturday, September 5th.
The event featured a border battle between the lake neighboring counties of Cuyahoga, Lorain, and Erie. The three counties were paired amongst one another in a total of 12 races featuring 19 High Schools. Lorain County won the event on Thursday and Saturday capturing 9 of the 12 races.
The Sailors opened up the day with races 1 (boys) and 2 (girls) facing off against Amherst (Lorain County) and Lutheran West (Cuyahoga). It was Amherst that won both races as the Sailors finished 2nd (boys) and 3rd (girls).
Luke See led the Sailors in Race 1 by finishing as the individual runner up, turning in his best time of the year with a 16:39 only being bested by the top performance of the entire day of the 6 boys races when freshman Ty Perez (Amherst) crossed the line with an impressive time of 16:20. Joining See in the top-10 for the Sailors was Alex Hershberger, who finished 8th overall with a time of 18:10. The Sailors rounded out the scoring with Jacob Webb (17th/19:35), Jayden Bearden (18th/19:38), and Zach Jones (23rd/20:58).
The Ladies showed a large improvement from a week ago as each scoring runner clocked a significantly better time than a week ago including Allison Leopold (15th/24:06), Grace Morris (23rd/28:10), Alex Trendle (24th/28:10), Danielle McGlothlin (27th/30:58), and Kaidyn Cobb (29th/34:34).
The Sailors travel to the Tiffin Columbia Invitational on Saturday, September 12th at Hedges-Boyer Park.
