Congratulations to the Sailorway Middle School Football teams as they both took home victories last Thursday night from arch rival Firelands/South Amherst Middle School in double header action.
In the first game of the evening, the seventh graders were able to grind out a great victory beating the home team 8 to 6. Leading the Sailors on offense were quarterback Evan Kuhn who had several key completions and a number of big runs including a touch down scamper. Ashton Juszczyk added the two point conversion for the Sailors. Sean Brownell and Aiden Saunders, Aiden Kyser, aided the offense as well. Zach Werth led the defense with 2 interceptions and several key tackles. Brock Meyers, Adam Gerber, Chad Ellis, Cole Rini, as well as numerous others all starred on defense to help keep the Falcon offense caged all night long.
In the second game of the evening, the 8th grade team took the energy of the 7th grade game, and stuffed the Falcons first offensive drive. The Sailors took the ball and broke out to a quick 6 – 0 lead against the Falcons. Quarterback AJ Mathis took off on a spectacular run, dancing down the sidelines to put the Sailors on the board. Beau Benesh added a key block on the play to get AJ into the end zone. The Sailors next touchdown followed up another amazing run by Mathis as he raced 84 yards down the sideline to the Falcon 6 yard line. Two plays later Mathis hit Terrence Anders with a well placed pass in the front corner of the end zone another Sailor score which made the lead 12 – 0 at halftime. In the second half, the Sailors continued their dominance of the Falcon defense behind the blocking of Timothy Bucher, Mason Plas, Jacob Mayer, Collin Angney, Liam Fleming, and Curtis Turner who open huge holes and gaps for Benesh and Cohen Mooney who combined for over 100 yards rushing. Dominic DiFucci, Nick Freeman, Cayden Dodge, and Oliver Roy added key blocks on the outside for the Sailors As well. Benesh also added a touchdown on a 50 yard run to seal the deal for the Sailors. The Sailors also dominated on defense as Anders, Angney, Benesh, and Mooney all made substantial contributions to the effort. Caleb German, John Brass, Ashton Clifton and Logan Peterson helped keep the Falcon air attack grounded. Peterson and German made the big impact, picking off two of the Falcon passes; Peterson returned his 60 yards.
Both teams look to continue their winning ways as the 8th grade hosts Avon Lake on Wednesday this week and the 7th grade travels to Avon Lake on Thursday.
