The Sailors track and field team ended their season on a high note this past weekend and they had two athletes competing at the state meet in Columbus.
Senior Addison Painter qualified for state in the 300 hurdles and looked to advance to the final, which would take place on Saturday. Painter was scheduled to run the preliminary event at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 3:30 on Friday but mother nature had other plans. About 15 minutes before Painter was slated to run, there was lightning in the area and the stadium was cleared out. This very slow moving storm stuck around for about 3 hours, and with one down pour later, Painter was set to run at about 7 P.M. that evening. Painter went on a to run a 40.73 in his preliminary run, and failed to qualify for finals.
However, Saturday mother nature cooperated and it was a great day for some competition. Senior Macy Urig was set to compete in the pole vault for the Sailors. Despite a few misses early in the event, Urig found herself on the podium at the state meet for the second consecutive year, improving three positions from the year before. Urig who was seeded third in the event cleared 11’10” and finished third overall in the meet. Urig will end her career as a Sailor with the school record in the pole vault at 12’, in addition to being a two time All-Ohioan, with many other accolades spread out across four years.
Congratulations to Macy and Addison on a very successful track season!
