Sailors Host Huron with Chance to Clinch Share of SBC

Vermilion hosts Perkins on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017 for boys basketball.

Friday night, February 17th could be an historic day for the Sailors as they host the Huron Tigers on Senior night with at least a share of the SBC crown on the line.

The #VBN boys basketball team enters the game with a record of 16-4 overall, 10-2 in their first year in the Sandusky Bay Conference. Huron sports an identical 10-2 record in the conference and will be looking to avenge a loss to the Sailors earlier in the year; a game in which Vermilion trailed by 15 points before staging a late comeback to win.

The Sailors have won 3 consecutive contests against the Tigers, but each was decided by 5 points or fewer. The teams share an OHSAA district as well as being conference foes, and so they are developing quite the rivalry.

In addition to the conference ramifications, several Sailor Seniors will also be honored as they play their last home game on Friday. Jake Barnes, Nathan Schneiders, Kaleb Caskey, Scott Gillespie and captains Tristan Mayer, Drew Dawson and Nik Barkdull will all be tipping it off for the last time in front of the home fans. They have each made countless contributions to the program over their four years. And while they will be missed, this game will be a chance for our Seniors and their teammates to make history; to establish a legacy and be forever marked in the rafters of the VHS gym.

Huron will inevitably be ready to play their scrappy brand of basketball in an attempt to keep the Sailors from cutting down the nets. Expect an exciting game from start to finish, and expect the team who is able to control the tempo and take care of the basketball to emerge victorious at the end.

With support from the great Vermilion fan base, the Sailors look to clinch at least a share of their first conference championship in 10 years, and only the 7th in school history. Come out and cheer on the hardworking young men, they deserve it.

If you can’t make it to VHS for the game, you can stream it online. Watch the action live and listen to Cody Rice and Cece Dillon do the play-by-play here:

Thank you for your unending support, and thank you to Jake, Nathan, Kaleb, Scott, Tristan, Drew and Nik for four amazing years.

Beat the Tigers!
